Javier Stauring foi premiado Prêmio das Crianças do Mundo 2015 por seus mais de 20 anos luta por crianças encarceradas e suas famílias, e pelas vítimas de crimes e seus familiares. 

Javier deseja criar a justiça através de reconciliação e diálogo, em vez de punição e vingança. Agora Javier trabalha para a diocese católica em Los Angeles há vinte anos, com “justiça restaurativa”. Isso significa tentar obter justiça “reparando” os danos causados por métodos outros que a punição, como por meio de conversas, educação e serviço comunitário.

Javier faz de tudo, desde visitar crianças em prisões, apoiar vítimas e persuadir políticos e outros poderosos para que tornem o sistema legal mais amigável para crianças.

Javier ajudou a mudar leis e regras que ajudam tanto crianças encarceradas quanto vítimas. Ele ajuda líderes de todas as religiões, de cristãos a muçulmanos e budistas, a trabalhar pelos direitos da criança juntos uns com os outros e com as próprias crianças. O trabalho de Javier contribuiu para todo tipo de coisa, desde dar a avós o direito de visitar seus netos presos, a leis novas e mais amigáveis para crianças, que oferecem a crianças condenadas à prisão perpétua a chance de um dia serem livres.

Javier ajudou a mudar leis e regras que ajudam tanto crianças encarceradas quanto vítimas.

Javier works with many others – advocates, organisations and authorities – with:

• Developing programs that give incarcerated children access to education, support, culture and sport, which can help them create a better life.

• Developing programs where relatives of victims of crime can meet with incarcerated young people and support one another, allowing them to move on with their lives through healing dialogue instead of punishment and revenge. 

• Giving incarcerated children the chance to get visits from their grandparents (not just from their parents, as used to be the case) and increasing the number of visiting days.

• Getting new laws passed that help young people serving life sentences, and that protect children and young people from violence and abuse when they are incarcerated along with adults. 

• Protesting to stop solitary confinement and inhumane treatment of incarcerated children.

• Giving faith leaders the opportunity to work together for change alongside incarcerated children, victims of crime, schools, universities and organisations.
